Post lot text
- Subodh Gupta
"I work with my childhood memories. Today, when I use stainless steel utensils in my work, people say I'm taking advantage of a Bihari scenario. It's a source of laughter for me. I am making art, not branding India. I make very contemporary artworks. My work emerges from the mundane, from my surroundings." - Subodh Gupta
Subodh Gupta's ideas manifest themselves in a variety of media such as performance, video, photography, installations and sculptures. The artist reappropriates ordinary objects that have become ubiquitous symbols of his native Indian culture. Scooters, bicycles, buckets, pots and pans, and kitchen utensils all parade through his studio. And it is from these vernacular objects that the artist reflects on economic, social, cultural and environmental changes. Jootah —a combination of sound installation, aluminium sinks, antique Indian dishes, pipes and mini hi-fi systems — is an emblematic example of his work.
Like Eugène Atget, who photographed Old Paris at the gates of the 20th century, Subodh Gupta reflects the transition of the world in which we live, and more particularly that of his native country. He makes time stand still through these domestic objects, defined as “finely crafted pieces of the cosmos”, according to the anthropologist and writer Bhrigupati Singh. He paves the way for change and is interested in what we leave behind, what inevitably disappears.
In an effort to be both aesthetic and meaningful, the materials and objects that make up Gupta's sculptures reflect the uses of everyday life. They then lead to a reflection, not only on communal and personal practices, but also on how banal experiences and habits propel us into a spiritual dimension. In his own practice of ready-made, Gupta constructs his work with what he finds, what catches his eye and what he deems sufficiently and highly symbolic.
The artist has become an icon of contemporary art and now lives and works in Delhi. He conceives his exhibitions around the world as places of encounter, discussion, exchange and debate according to the Hindi concept of Adda, as shown in Paris-Delhi-Bombay... l'Inde vue par des artistes indiens et français in 2011 at the Centre Pompidou, Everything Is Inside in 2014 with more than forty-five works at the Museum für Moderne Kunstin Frankfurt and at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, or his retrospective at the Monnaie de Paris in 2018, during which Jootah was exhibited.
