Further details
A SET OF FOUR POLYCHROME MARBLE BALUSTERS, PROBABLY PORTUGUESE, LISBON, ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF THE ARCHITECT JOÃO ANTUNES (1642-1712), LATE 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY, LATER MOUNTED AS A CONSOLE INCORPORATING ITALIAN 16TH or 17TH CENTURY GILT-WOOD PANELS
João Antunes (1642-1712), born in Braga, was a Portuguese architect and master mason who worked on many of Lisbon's churches. Trained on the Ribeira Palace renovation site, he was appointed architect to the Portuguese Court after the War of Restoration. His work includes the decorations for the chapel of Saint-Vincent de Fora, the Santo Antão church and, at the Convent of Jesus in Aveiro, the tomb of Princess Joana of Portugal, daughter of King Alfonso V.
The four pedestals presented here reveal a tone characteristic of the Portuguese works executed under the direction of João Antunes. The style of these marquetries is inspired by the marble decorations created in Italy, particularly in southern Italy, but differs from them in the abundance and vivacity of the polychrome contrasts against the black and white background, with contours outlined with a dark line.
