The popular theme of 'Susanna in the Bath' tells an Old Testament story in the book of Daniel 13: 1-64 about a pious young girl who was married to the wealthy Jojakim. Two respectable older judges, who visited the husband, fell in love with the young beauty and lurked when she wanted to bathe. They tried to force the girl to sleep with them otherwise they would claim to have caught her in adultery. The devout Susanna, like the ancients, called for help and was accused of adultery. Shortly before the sentence was to be executed, Daniel interrogated the two witnesses separately with the help of the holy ghost and was thus able to expose the two as liars. Das beliebte Bildthema von Susanna im Bade erzählt eine alttestamentliche Geschichte im Buch Daniel 13,1-64 über ein frommes junges Mädchen, das mit dem wohlhabenden Jojakim verheiratet war. Zwei angesehene ältere Richter, die mit dem Ehemann verkehrten, verliebten sich in die junge Schöne und lauerten ihr auf als sie baden wollte. Sie versuchten das Mädchen dazu zu nötigen mit ihnen zu schlafen, anderenfalls würden sie behaupten, sie beim Ehebruch erwischt zu haben. Die fromme Susanna rief ebenso wie die Alten um Hilfe und wurde des Ehebruchs bezichtigt. Kurz bevor das Urteil vollstreckt werden sollte, befragte Daniel mit Hilfe einer göttlichen Eingebung die beiden Alten getrennt voneinander und konnten so als Lügner enttarnt werden. Während viele Künstler den Moment der Entdeckung und Nötigung der nackten Susanna abbildeten, stellt das vorliegende Gemälde den Moment der Erpressung bzw. das Bitten des Mädchens dar.
