Данная книга имеет своей задачей объяснить искушение Иисуса Христа в пустыне от дьявола, то есть проследить его происхождение и выяснить его значение. Прежде всего автор исследует происхождение искушения Христа в пустыне, а именно вопрос о происхождении евангельской истории, иначе о литературной и исторической достоверности евангельского повествования. Затем он изучает внутреннюю действительность искушений Христа. Наконец, в книге определяется значение искушений Иисуса.
Михаил Михайлович Тареев (1867—1934) — религиозный философ, богослов, писатель, преподаватель Московской духовной академии. Отец знаменитого советского врача Евгения Михайловича Тареева. Профессор Московской духовной академии (1902—1917). Выступал за активное участие мирян в приходской жизни.
