Pocket watch: important, big gold/enamel pocket watch with pearls on both sides, Pierre Gregson Paris, ca. 1775
Ca. Ø51mm, ca. 81g, 18K gold, orient pearls on both sides, enamel painting in finest quality on back (unfortunately damaged, needs restoration), pendant with opening button, signed verge movement, movement intact, signed enamel dial in perfect condition, original pink gold hands, except for the damaged enamel painting, the watch is in very good condition. Jean-Pierre Gregson was a French court watchmaker of English descent. Enamel watches with his signature are among the most wanted collectors' objects and reach high collector's prices in international art auctions. Gregson was obviously a very capable master and one of the first watchmakers to use Lépine's bridge caliber. In 1776 he became a court watchmaker, which soon became visible in the designation of his watches. At first they were signed with "Gregson à Paris", later with the addition "Hger du Roy". His significant position is also evident in the fact that he was appointed in 1786 as a member of a commission establishing a royal manufactory. The other members were the most famous watchmakers in France - Breguet, Berthoud and Lepaute. In perfect condition, this watch would be a museum object worth 20,000-30,000 €/CHF. A comparable watch was offered in Geneva auction in 2012 (source: https://www.cortrie.de/go/Q2W).
