Pocket watch: important and museum-quality gold/enamel verge watch with strike on bell, Higgs & Evans No.11999
Ca. Ø48mm, approx. 119g, 18k gold, pair case, very elaborately enamelled case in the typical Higgs & Evans style with applied pearls and oval cartouche with magnifying glass painting, representation of Angelique et Medor, two figures from the 16th century work "Orlando Furioso" by the Italian author Ludovico Ariosto. the inner case is magnificently engraved, pierced and fitted with a bell for the striking mechanism, the movement is protected by the original dome, signed and numbered 11999, the very fine verge movement with repeater is matching signed and numbered and of the finest quality with diamond endstone, signed original enamel dial and original pink gold hands, intact and with good sound, English enamel verge watch of exceptional quality. Provenance: Collection Georges Baptiste "La Mesure du Temps dans les Collections belges". Higgs and Evans were highly respected watchmakers who made longcase and table clocks as well as small watches. They first worked in Sweetings Alley and later in the Royal Exchange. The company was founded in 1775 and existed until 1825. Higgs and Evans specialised in making watches for the Spanish market; some of their pieces can be seen in the Science Museum.
