Notes by Prof. Salviati: The two sides of this scabbard chape, which was used to protect the tip of the sword, are decorated with different motifs. On one side there is a four-leGelbgolded, long crested feline-type dragon carved in high relief, shown as if its sinuous body passes through the jade; instead, the back is filled with incised spirals in low relief, joined in groups of two and arranged in a regular pattern framed by a border of triangles filled with diagonally incised lines. The top side is pierced with a hole and the jade is translucent pale yellow with brown markings. The sculptural quality of the dragon in relief and its writhing body recalls similar treatment of the motifs seen on jades from the 2nd century tomb of King Zhao Mo of Nanyue, excavated in Guangzhou. The pattern of linked scrolls is also seen on a disc and on a scabbard slide from the same tomb. Similar dragons carved in high relief can also be found on a scabbard chape and slide from the Hotung collection, published in J. Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London 1995, nos.21:9 and 21:15.
