Estimate value

MILNE, A.A. (1882-1956). A group of 10 plays. London and New York: Samuel French, 1921-1926.

A group of ten separate edition plays all signed by Milne, many of which are first editions. Though little known as a dramatist today, A.A. Milne was once considered “one of England’s most successful, prolific, and best-known playwrights,” at times making more income in a week than many could hope to see in a year. Moreover, the positive reception of one of Milne’s earliest plays, Mr. Pim Passes By, as “delicate, delightful, humorous, subtle, tender and clever,” clearly hints at his future success in writing children’s literature. A rare, possibly unique, assemblage. See Ann Thwaite’s A.A. Milne: His Life, 1990.

Comprises:
- Mr. Pim Passes By. London: Samuel French, 1921. French’s Acting Edition 1342.
- The Stepmother. London: Samuel French, 1921. French’s Acting Edition 2604.
- Wurzel-Flummery. New York: Samuel French, 1922.
- The Romantic Age. London: Samuel French, 1922. French’s Acting Edition 1013.
- The Artist. London: Samuel French, 1923. French’s Acting Edition 854.
- The Camberley Triangle. London: Samuel French, 1925. French’s Acting Edition 1288.
- To Have the Honor. London: Samuel French, 1925. French’s Acting Edition 422.

- The Man in the Bowler Hat. London: Samuel French, 1926. French’s Acting Edition 2639.
- Ariadne, or Business First. London: Samuel French, 1926. French’s Acting Edition 2037.

Together, ten volumes, octavo. Original wrappers in various colors (spines sunned and with repairs on the five larger volumes, the spines perished on The Romantic Age and Wurzel-Flummery).
