Estimate value
$ 3 000 – 4 000

L’Art de verifier les dates was first published in 1750 by Charles Clémencet, with the collaboration of Maur-François Dantine and Ursin Duran, all Benedictines of the Congregation of St. Maur, which earned a reputation for producing works of high scholarly value before it was suppressed during the French Revolution. The work was reissued in revised editions by historian François Clément in 1770 and 1783-87, and again by Nicolás Viton de Saint-Allais, a genealogist and heraldist, in this 1818 edition.
Six volumes, quarto (295 x 223mm). (Occasional spotting.) Later 19th-century French dark blue straight-grain morocco gilt by Simier, all edges gilt, with the arms of the Duchesse de Berry on covers. Provenance: Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile, Duchesse de Berry (1798-1870; binding).
