Lot 23 | The Beatles in India
An interesting collection of three handwritten letters from Pattie Boyd to her mother during her soujourn in Rishikesh with sister Jenny, then husband George Harrison, and the other three Beatles with their wives and girlfriends, to attend an extended course of Transcendental Meditation under the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, between 16 February - 12 April 1968, the letters detailing their daily life in the ashram during this period: the first in black ink on both sides of a sheet of Airmail paper, post-marked 7 February 1968, There are about 60 people from different countries and they are all very interesting... It's a bit like school, we are learning a lot. There are lectures every evening and Maharishi teaches us in the day... Donovan should be arriving today - we feel a bit cut off so when a new person is arriving it's rather exciting. It's George's birthday today so there will be a ceremony and birthday cake this evening; the second in pale pink ink on four sheets of white notepaper, We are having a great time, it's like a holiday camp... We wake up early in the morning to the sound of peacocks then we walk to breakfast. We have all our meals in the open under a sort of roof... Quite often monkeys sit in the trees then jump onto the table and grab some food then run off... Two nights ago Maharishi organised for everyone here to go in two big boats and float up and down the river while two men chanted. Then George and Donovan started everyone singing. There was a mixture of German and English songs... At the moment I am on the roof of our block with George, John & Cyn - they are sunbathing & playing guitars... Ringo & Maureen went home because she has a phobia about flys [sic], which is so silly... The longest I have meditated is 7 hours... We all (our gang) dress alike in big baggy trousers with a tie string at the waist called pyjamas and then a big long shirt on top, additionally annotated with a drawing of their clothing; the third on two sheets of Spiritual Regeneration Movement Foundation of India letterhead, I have been in my room (without going out) for two days and this is the third. I have been meditating most of the time and stopping for meals. George comes in and has his meals with me. We are in different rooms now because we kept disturbing each other before... George is going to write an article for the Daily Mirror about what it's like here... An Indian musician who came here to play for George's birthday also came on my birthday and gave me a beautiful dilruba, closing the letter with caricature doodles of herself, George and Jenny
