The Beauty and the Monster

Madame de Genlis, 1785

GENLIS, Caroline-Stéphanie-Félicité, Madame de (1746-1830). The Beauty and the Monster. A Comedy. Worcester, MA: Isaiah Thomas, 1785.

First American appearance of Beauty and the Beast—a rare survival in contemporary wrappers. This classic fairy tale contains themes and elements dating back to antiquity, but the version which has entered modern pop culture originates with the 18th-century French author Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. The present work is a translation of a theatrical adaptation of that tale by Madame de Genlis, written for use in girls' education. Isaiah Thomas, founder of the American Antiquarian Society, was a proponent of her work and printed several editions of her didactic dramas for children. Only two copies are recorded at auction RBH and ABPC, one in 1984 and then the Brinley Copy. Nichols 122; Evans 19021.

12mo (150 x 92mm). Pp. 35. (Stain in gutter, some toning.) Stab sewn in wrapper made from reused almanac sheet (chipped with some worming, losses at spine). Chemise and slipcase.
