Sabine BARING-GOULD (1834-1924). The Book of Were-wolves: Being an Account of a Terrible Superstition. London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1865.

First edition of the classic monograph on lycanthropy. Sabine Baring-Gould, most famous now as the author of the hymn Onward Christian Soldiers, was an Anglican priest and antiquarian whose work on folklore influenced the uncanny tales of later writers including HP Lovecraft. Sadleir 159.

Octavo. Half-title, wood-engraved frontispiece, 2 pp. ads at end (occasional light spots and toning). Later green cloth with red morocco title piece. Provenance: "Dr Charlton" (signature on half-title) – J.L. Weir (bookplate and invoice dated 1960).
