Lot 127 | The East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere
Estimate value
$ 2 000 – 3 000
Japanese WWII-era propaganda map promoting the ideal of a self-sufficient political bloc of Asian nations—led by the Japanese—free from the rule of Western powers. This imperial concept was created and promulgated for western-occupied Asian populations between 1930-1945. It extended across the Asia-Pacific and promoted the cultural and economic unity of East Asians, Southeast Asians, South Asians and Oceanians. The original concept may well have had a pan-Asian ideal of freedom and independence from Western colonial rule at its core, but it was highjacked by militarists and nationalists, who viewed it as an effective policy to strengthen Japan's position and to advance its dominance within Asia.
Chromolithographic map of East and Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific Ocean, on paper, approximately 1470 x 1440 mm. (Light fading, some fold wear.)
