Lot 28 | The Great Town of Boston
CARWITHAM, John (fl. 1723-1760), after BURGIS, William (fl. 1713-1730). A South East View of the Great Town of Boston in New England in America. London: Carington Bowles, c.1763.

Hand-colored view of early Boston, the second portrayal of the old town. The first known view of Boston is William Burgis's 1722 engraving, and both works gaze from Noddle's Island in Boston Harbor, showing the waterfront on either side of Long Wharf. John Carwitham flourished as an engraver of prints and bookplates from 1723 to around mid-century, in that time producing two other important American views—of New York and Philadelphia—which, like this Boston view, are scarce and appealing. This is Deák's probable third state, numbered "34" but retaining "Great Town'' in the title (by the time of the fourth state c.1790, the publishers deemed Boston to be a "City"). Deák 86.

Hand-colored engraving, 296 x 445mm plate on 310 x 455mm sheet, sight size (short, closed tear at top margin, mild toning, a little discoloration in clouds). Matted and framed (unexamined outside of frame).
