The Maltese Falcon

Dashiell Hammett

HAMMETT, Dashiell (1894-1961). The Maltese Falcon. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930.

One of the most influential detective novels of all time: a beautiful copy of the first edition in the iconic dust-jacket. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. First serialized in Black Mask beginning in September 1929, The Maltese Falcon introduced the world to Sam Spade, the archetypal hard-boiled detective. In his investigation into the murder of his partner Archer, Spade became the personification of the American private eye. John Huston's Maltese Falcon (1941) is the most famous film adaptation, starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, Mary Astor and Peter Lorre. Hubin, p. 185; Keating, Crime and Mystery, the 100 Best Books, 16; Layman A3.1a.

Octavo. Original grey cloth, upper cover with falcon design in blue, spine with geometric design in black and blue, lower cover with Borzoi imprint, top edge stained blue, other edges untrimmed (upper corners slightly bumped, very slight offsetting to endpapers from dust-jacket); original pictorial dust-jacket (some toning and inconsequential tears, small chips or creasing at spine ends and folds, light edgewear, small stain to lower panel, price-clipped); housed in a custom yellow cloth solander box (a little marked).
