A superb copy in original wrappers of Hale's famous work written to inspire patriotism during the Civil War. First edition in book form with two autograph notes. Hale was a Unitarian minister, author, and ardent abolitionist who later became the chaplain of the US Senate. This is his most famous work, a political fable about a man who renounces his American citizenship and comes to dearly regret it. It was first printed in the Atlantic Monthly.
