‘The best novel about the blitz written during the second world war’ (Norman Sherry): first edition in the original dust-jacket. One of Greene’s ‘entertainments’, he wrote the manuscript whilst on assignment in Siera Leone, and drew the title from a poem by Wordsworth. Wobbe A18.

Octavo. (Small stain on L2.) Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in black, publisher’s device stamped on lower cover in black, Daily Telegraph magazine clipping (13 April 1973) loosely inserted (head/ and tailcap lightly bruised); original printed dust-jacket (spine just sunned, small chips and wear at spine ends, a couple of short closed tears, price-clipped); housed in modern dark green quarter morocco box.
