Comprising an Extra Civil Grand Cross breast star, gold, silver, silver-gilt and enamel, formed of pierced rays with typical curved tips; the centre with three gold crowns on white enamel ground within red enamelled outer frame with the order`s motto in gold lettering, within chiseled, gold borders; the reverse engraved HUNT & ROSKELL / LATE STORR & MORTIMER / JEWELLERS TO THE QUEEN / 156 NEW BOND STREET / LONDON, and maker's mark WN possibly for William Naylor and a gold neck badge without riband, unmarked
Awarded to the Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning, K.G., G.C.B., K.C.S.I., P.C. (1812-1862) in April 1859. As Governor-General of India he ensured stability of the administration during the Indian rebellion of 1857 and became the first Viceroy of India after the transfer of power from the East India Company to the Crown of Queen Victoria in 1858.
