Lot 389 | The New Negro
Alain LOCKE (editor) (1885-1954). The New Negro. An Interpretation. New York: Albert and Charles Boni, 1925.

A landmark of the Harlem Renaissance: first edition with the elusive dust-jacket. Representing the creative endeavours of the New Negro Movement, the anthology portrays the African-American community's pursuit of civil rights and a new, diverse identity, offering a compelling reflection of the era's social and artistic transformation.

Large octavo (219 x 148mm). Illustrated throughout, with 27 full-page illustrations and 37 in-text of which 50 are monochrome and 14 are colour-printed, a further 7 illustrated music scores of which 3 are full-page (some light spots, tear into text at pp. 251-252 and one short marginal tear). Original cloth-backed paper-covered blue boards, lettered in blue on spine, top edge pink (edges lightly worn, corners just bumped, minor stain on spine); original dust-jacket (small chip at lower edge and tiny hole to spine, extremities lightly worn, some lights marks, stain to spine). Provenance: contemporary gift inscription on half-title.

Please note that this is an historical artefact. Some of its language and terminology, which reflects the context and culture of the time of its creation, is now considered outdated and culturally offensive; its contents may be at odds with contemporary views.
