Egerton, 1814. – Emma. London: John Murray, 1816. – Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion. London: John Murray, 1818.A handsomely bound complete set of the novels of Jane Austen. Comprised of the second edition of Sense & Sensibility and first editions of Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion. From the library of William H. Woodin (1868-1934), an American industrialist originallly from Pennsylvania who served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. He died in New York City in 1934 and his library of fine first editions was sold by Parke-Bernet in 1941. 16 volumes, 12mo (172 x 95mm). With facsimile half titles (titles and some other preliminaries washed and reinserted; title for vol. 3 Sense & Sensibility is in facsimile; Pride & Prejudice with a few short closed marginal tears neatly repaired). Uniformly bound by Riviere in full brown levant morocco gilt, gilt edges, inner gilt dentelles (first volume with slight wear at upper joint). Provenance: William H. Woodin (bookplate; his sale, Parke-Bernet, 2-4 December 1941, lot 37). Sold w.a.f. as a set, not subject to return.
