The Doheny copy, in a Cosway-style binding, with delicate portrait miniature depicting Shelley. Both volumes of this set bear the paper versions of Estelle Doheny's bookplate, as well as the bookplates of her husband.



Two volumes, octavo (187 x 132mm). Frontispieces. Half-titles. Full red levant morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for J.W. Robinson Co., covers with decorative gilt borders, cornerpieces incorporating green morocco love-heart onlays, each cover set with small gilt central medallion with tan morocco onlay, the upper medallions gilt-stamped "PBS", and the lower medallions gilt-stamped "Pansies Let My Flowers Be," with onlaid pansy; spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, three repeating panels with small onlaid green morocco floral ornament, board edges and turn-ins gilt, vol. 1 with brown levant morocco gilt upper doublure with a central recessed panel set with a hand-painted oval portrait miniature of Shelley on ivory in a metal frame, wreathed border of gilt and red morocco onlay flowers; all edges gilt and partially gauffred, stamp-signed by the binders on upper turn-ins; fleece-lined folding box. Provenance: Edward Laurence Doheny, 1856-1935 (bookplate) – Estelle Doheny, 1875-1958 (paper bookplate, her sale, Christie’s New York, 18 October 1988, lot 1580).
