The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club

Chapman & Hall, 1836-1837.

DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. London: Chapman & Hall, 1836-1837.

The Pforzheimer-Manney copy of the first edition in original parts of Dickens’ first novel. Mix of issues: text in many of parts is in the first state, excluding part 1, where gathering E is in the third state with 26 being numbered and including signature, and parts 2-9. All addresses present, although the one in part 10 is not in the first state. More than half of etchings are in the first state. Nearly all the wrappers are first issue, with exceptions being the rear wrapper of part 2, the front wrapper of part 3, and parts 4 and 5. Overall, a very good copy. Eckel 17-58; Hatton & Cleaver, 3-88; Podeschi/Gimbel, A15.

20 parts in 19, octavo. Half-title, all issues of the “Pickwick Advertiser” except in parts 4 and 5, inserted slips and ads as called for by Hatton & Cleaver except for the Chapman & Hall catalogue in part 1; “The Toilet” or any variations in part 3; “Grattan’s Publications” in part 5; “Phrenology Made Easy” in part 7; “Pigot’s Colored Views” in part 13; and the final leaf of “Mechi’s Catalogue of Cutlery” in part 12. Additional vignette title and etched frontispiece by Hablot K. Browne; 41 etched plates by R. Seymour, Robert William Buss, and Hablot K. Browne (toned). Original light blue-green pictorial wrappers (some soiling, extremities chipped, most spines frayed and some with minor, precise restorations). Two red morocco boxes, slipcases. Provenance: The Carl H. Pforzheimer Library (small library stamp on inside of rear wrappers) – Richard Manney (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby’s 11 October 1991, lot 78).
