First edition of Bacon's only English work printed in his lifetime, "the forerunner of the De Augmentis Scientia"(Pforzheimer). [QUOTE NORMAN ON CONTENT.] According to Pforzheimer, very few copies have the two Errata leaves, which were likely only added to later copies. STC (2nd ed.), 1164; Norman 97; Pforzheimer 36.

Quarto (178 x 129mm). Without two errata leaves as often (some sheets toned.) 19th-century red morocco by Riviere (rebacked). Provenance: series of family notes relating to Thomas Majors (dead 1754), John Major (dead 1790), Sarah Major (1793) – Charles George Milnes Gaskell, 1842-1919, English lawyer and friend of Henry Adams and Henry James (morocco bookplate).
