The Vinegar Bible

John Baskett, 1717

BIBLE, in English ("The Vinegar Bible"). Oxford: John Baskett, 1717.

Large paper copy of the "magnificent edition" known as the Vinegar Bible, bound in contemporary black morocco with the arms of King George (Darlow and Moule). This edition's sobriquet comes from the misprint "the parable of the vinegar" in Luke XX in place of the "parable of the vineyards." Harry Carter writes of this edition that "only Baskerville's Bible (Cambridge, 1763) is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type, impression, and paper." Darlow and Moule 735A; Herbert 942; see Harry Carter, The History of the Oxford University Press, 1975, I.

Two volumes, folio (535 x 340mm). Title and calendar printed in red and black, ruled in red throughout, engraved frontispiece by Du-Bose after J. Thornhill, general title with engraved view of Oxford by G. Vander Gucht, title to the New Testament with vignette, engraved head-pieces and initials (a number of closed edge tears, some repaired, about 5 affecting printed area; faint dampstain in vol 2). Contemporary black morocco gilt, edges gilt, with gilt Royal Arms of King George (lacking ties, wear to joints, some scrapes to board of second volume).
