Estimate value
£ 4 000 – 6 000
THOMAS AQUINAS (c.1225-1274)

Quaestiones de duodecim quodlibet. Nuremberg: Johann Sensenschmidt and Andreas Frisner, 15 April 1474.

Third edition, the first work printed by the Sensenschmidt-Frisner partnership. First printer at Nuremberg, Johann Sensenschmidt probably learned printing in Mainz before establishing his press in 1470. His partnership with Frisner from 1474 was accompanied by a set of new types. In Twelve Questions on Various Subjects Aquinas adopts the form of question-answer in grappling with metaphysics, following Aristotle. He applies logic and theology to answer questions ranging from marriage to the very essence of matter. This work was once bound with the following lot, with which it shares illumination, decoration and index tabs; the two works (the present Quaestiones and the first edition of Summa contra gentiles [Goff T-190]) were also bound together at an early date in a copy sold at Christie’s, 1 December 2016, lot 94. HC(Add) 1402*; BMC II 406; CIBN T-140; BSB-Ink. T-250; Bod-inc. T-145; Goff T-184; ISTC it00184000.

Royal folio (397 x 270mm). 135 leaves (of 136, without blank p4). Incipit and colophon printed in red, decorated by a contemporary south-German artist with opening illuminated initial with extensions, rubricated in blue and red (last leaf rehinged and with minor repairs affecting a few letters, small marginal repairs in last quire, few wormholes in last 3 quires, small stain at extreme upper margin). Modern calf, early index tabs. Provenance: contemporary annotations – ?stamp erased from 1⁄6r.
