Lot 212 | Three typed letters signed
ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. (1882-1945). Three typed letters signed to various correspondents, 15 April 1918 to 19 February 1929.

Three pages, approximately 215 x 275mm, on varying letterheads (occasional chips to the edges, adhesive remnants to the versos, some spots of toning). [With:] a World War I certificate to William F. Cole recognizing his donation of protective eye equipment during the Navy's "Eyes for the Navy" campaign, bearing Roosevelt's printed signature, c.1918.

A series of varied correspondence spanning his tenure as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Vice Presidential candidate, and New York Governor. First, as New York Governor on Executive Chamber letterhead, Roosevelt writes to congressman and future Supreme Court Chief Justice Fred Vinson, adding "...we should endeavor to find those fundamental principles of Democracy on which we all can agree, rather than spend our time arguing questions on which there is no general agreement...while the task before us is of considerable magnitude, 'the job can be done'..." (19 February 1929). Second, as a Vice Presidential candidate, Roosevelt writes "...I should be very pleased, indeed, to feel you were working with us this year and Mr. McCarthy will be only too glad to explain the various ways you can help the ticket..." (31 August 1920). Lastly, on Assistant Secretary of the Navy letterhead, Roosevelt thanks William F. Cole for his "prompt and patriotic response to the NAVY's call for binoculars, telescopes, and spy-glasses...you have supplied 'Eyes for the NAVY' during a very trying period." (15 April 1918).
