Ä., the "Kasseler Tischbein", is one of the most talented and influential members of the large family of artists table leg. He belonged to the first Generation of German artists, who were training in Paris. The table leg where he attended the Atelier of Charles-André Vanloo, and was able to study the splendid state portraits of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud and Nicolas de Largillière in the Original. It's a stay in Italy followed, where the table leg became friends in Venice by Giambattista Piazzetta. 1753 Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel appointed him court painter. As a result, he created numerous portraits of the landgraves, contributed to the decoration of the Kassel's castles and produced paintings for the art gallery. "Calm and inner awareness was the prevailing character of his countenance. Some deep introspective sense [...] gave his physiognomy a character of its own by Reflection and Serious [...]" (J. F. This basic character of the artist, as he is described in the first monograph on his work, reflected on the present portrait, the leg of the table in the still-young years (Marianne Heinz dated the painting in the time immediately after his appointment as court painter). It can be found in a self-portrait of the Kasseler Gemäldegalerie (Inv.No M 2001 No 26). In the case of the previous owners, it is the prestigious Kassel Henschel family. Significant representatives of, inter alia, Georg Christian Carl Henschel (1759-1835), founder of the foundry, Henschel son, and of the sculptor Johann Werner Henschel (1782-1850).
