Mehrteilig gearbeiteter Helm aus vernieteten Eisenplatten. Angesetzte Scheitelplatte mit umgeschlagenem Rand, der einteilig gearbeitete Helmkorpus an der Vorderseite mittels eines aufgenieteten, gegrateten Verstärkungsbandes verbunden. Separate Sehschlitze mit nach außen geschlagenen Brechrändern. Beidseitig je zehn geschlagene Atemlochungen in dreieckiger Anordnung. Umlaufende Doppellochungen zum Einbinden des Futters. Am unteren Rand der Rückseite vernietete Riemenöse. Höhe 39 cm, Gewicht 3.808 g.
Der Helm gehört zu einer Gruppe von insgesamt vier mittelalterlichen Topfhelmen, die heute meist als "Boissonas-Gruppe" bezeichnet werden. Diese seit dem 19. Jhdt. bekannten Helme wurden Ende der 90er Jahre umfangreichen wissenschaftlichen Tests unterzogen und u.a. im Institut für Teilchenphysik der ETH in Zürich einer C-AMS-Messung zur Altersbestimmung unterzogen. Anhand der damaligen Messergebnisse wurde das Alter der Helme auf das 13./14. Jhdt. bestimmt. Siehe hierzu: Ritter, Axel: "Die Topfhelme aus der Waffensammlung Boissonas", in der "Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für historische Waffen- und Kostümkunde", 42. Band, Jahrgang 2000, Heft 1, S. 35ff. Die damals verwendete Methodik ist in Fachkreisen aber umstritten und die Authentizität der Helme wird teils weiterhin angezweifelt.
Provenienz: Ehemals Sammlung des Genfer Ratsherren Charles Boissonas, der um 1865-1920 als Sammler aktiv war. Danach in wechselndem Schweizer Privatbesitz.
A Swiss knightly pot helmet, Switzerland, 13th/14th or 19th century
Composed of several riveted iron plates. Applied top with the lower edge turned over, the skull made of one piece and joined at front by a riveted, ridged band. Two eye slits with everted flanges. Either side with ten ventilation holes arranged in a triangular form. Encircled by double holes for the attachment of a lining. The reverse with a riveted ring at the lower edge. Height 39 cm, weight 3,808 g.
The present helmet belongs to a group of four medieval pot helmets frequently termed "Boissonas group" today. Known since the 19th century, these helmets were comprehensively tested and analysed with a C-AMS dating method at the Institute for Particle Physics of the ETH in Zurich in the late 1990s. According to the test results the helmets date back to the 13th/14th century. Cf. The method used at the time is controversial among experts, however, and the authenticity of the helmets is still called into question.
Provenance: Previously owned by the Genevan alderman Charles Boissonas who was an avid collector between 1865 and 1920. Then in various Swiss private collections.

Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
