Memoirs .. Year of Decisions. Years of Trial and Hope. New York: Doubleday & Company, 1955-1956.
Presentation copies of the President's Memoirs, inscribed by Truman to Eden. Truman served as Vice President from January to April 1945 under Franklin Roosevelt, and then assumed the presidency upon Roosevelt's death on 12 April 1945. Thus he oversaw the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan, implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established both the Truman Doctrine and NATO to contain the expansion of communism. In 1952 he did not contest the Presidential election, and among other projects in his post-political life sought a book deal for his memoirs for which he received $670,000. Truman found it a tortuous process, going through a dozen collaborators in the writing process, but when the memoirs were published they were a critical and commercial success.
2 volumes, octavo (235 x 151mm). Publisher's blue leather, Truman's signature stamped in gilt on upper covers, lettered in gilt on spines, top edges gilt, card slipcases (spines very fractionally faded, extremities faintly rubbed). Provenance: Harry S. Truman (authorial presentation inscriptions on half-titles, to:) – Anthony Eden.
