Lot 3374 | U-Boot-Kapitän Paul König (1867 - 1933) - Erinnerungskreuz zum 9. Juli 1916
Estimate value
€ 350
U-Boat Captain Paul König (1867 - 1933) - a Commemorative Cross for July 9th, 1916
Iron, the arms of the cross cast on both sides with the raised date "9. JULI 1916", a bronze-coloured medallion of non-ferrous metal in the centre with a profile portrait of König surrounded by the inscription "PAUL KÖNIG KAPITÄN / U-DEUTSCHLAND" on the obverse and an image of the submarine surrounded by the inscription "ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE ANKUNFT DES ERSTEN HANDELS U-BOOTES IN BALTIMORE / 9. JULI 1916" (commemorating the arrival of the first merchant submarine in Baltimore / 9th July 1916) on the reverse. Signs of use and age. With two original newspaper clippings from the 1930s. Width of the cross 72 mm, weight 280 g. Rare.
After the outbreak of World War I, König was drafted to the Imperial German Navy as a reserve Kapitänleutnant. He was initially deployed as officer in charge of the watch, later as chief mate. In January 1916 he entered submarine school, and in June he became the commander of the "U-Deutschland", the first merchant submarine, taking it on a successful voyage to the United States in 1916, which at that time was not yet involved in the war. The iron used as ballast was reworked into commemorative crosses, but König was not able to bring a large quantity of them to Germany because the United States had entered the war in the meantime. König led a group of blockade runners in 1917 until the end of the war and was subsequently assigned to the naval administration.
