James Joyce
JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Ulysses. London: John Lane The Bodley Head, 1936.
First British edition issued in a deluxe limited format of 100 copies bound in vellum, numbered 24 and signed by the author in ink. This edition was based on the second impression of the Odyssey Press edition of 1933, with the addition of appendices: ‘International Protest’ and ‘Injunction against Samuel Roth,’ a letter from Joyce to Bennett Cerf with other materials on the court case which lifted the ban on publication, and Pertzhoff's ‘Bibliography.’ Slocum and Cahoon 23
Large 8vo (254 x 190mm). Printed on mould-made paper, title printed in blue and black, publisher's prospectus ‘final and definitive edition’ loosely inserted at pp.36-7 (the prospectus with very minor significant spotting confined to margins and this offsetting slightly onto adjacent pp.36-7 in the book). Original vellum by the Leighton Straker Bookbinding Co., covers stamped with Homeric bow design after Eric Gill in gilt, titled in gilt on spine, top edges gilt (just a few very minor spots on fore-edge); original decorative-paper covered slipcase (insignificant discolouration to sides, extremities faintly rubbed). Provenance: Harold Arnold (loosely inserted invoice and receipt dated 15 October 1936 for his purchase of the book from the publisher for 4 guineas – some 2 guineas cheaper than the price advertised on the label on the slipcase; together with some newspaper clippings and pencilled notes relating to Joyce and Ulysses).
