Saint John the Evangelist, monastic work, probably France, painted miniature on paper mounted on painted silk, overall visible dimensions 21.5 × 16 cm, the central miniature portrait of the saint on paper 8 × 7 cm, showing John with scroll ''Deus caritas est et qui manet in charitate in Deo manet'' (1 John 4:16; ''God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God''), flanked by his attributes the chalice with serpent, symbolizing faith's triumph over evil, and the eagle, signifying spiritual elevation and divine revelation in the Gospel, finely executed with gold and metallic thread (liseré), possibly silver thread, verso status unconfirmed, the silk subtly darkened with age, small spots and mild yellowing present, colours in exceptionally well-preserved condition
