Lot 210 | "Unloved and lost on the plain"
KEROUAC, Jack (1922-1969). Autograph letter signed (“Jack”), 12 April 1950. Unpublished.

Octavo. Bifoliate leaf; all sides covered; browned; pencil. With envelope addressed in autograph, stained, postmarked Jamaica, New York.

"Hitting the road has never been a warm prospect, but slightly raw and chilly and dark. [...] Ah! Unloved and lost on the plain.”

The glory of the new novelist had gone, along, alas, with the money. But this remarkable letter full of charm and Kerouac poetry and poetic prose gives insight into the importance of Jack’s spiritual life. He writes in part, “Consider today...from the kitchen I suddenly saw buds on the backyard trees, and thought: Last year, last Spring in Denver, was a ‘disappointment’ to me... but the same buds were there, just as now...and was it really ‘disappointment,’ all that? For God gives you life, not what you in your shortsighted willfulness want.”
