Estimate value
€ 5 000 – 8 000
A RARE BLUE AND WHITE YELLOW-GROUND YUHUCHUNPING IN MING STYLE - China, ca. 18th c. - From an old private collection in southern Germany, acquired before 2000 - The design of bamboo, plantain and rocks was much favoured by Chinese literati for its auspicious connotations. Bamboo symbolises longevity, endurance and loyalty, as it does not break in the wind and remains green even in winter. The plantain tree is a symbol of education, as it comes from the classical legend of a scholar who wrote on plantain leaves because he was too poor to afford paper, and is therefore much admired by the Chinese for its fruit and large ornamental leaf. Rocks represent durability and steadfastness and are thus symbols of reliability and friendship. The decoration of the present piece is found on porcelains as early as the Hongwu period, and vases of similar shape and design are known from the Yongle reign: see a vase from the Qing court collection illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Blue and White Porcelain with Red Underglaze Painting (I), Hong Kong, 2000, no. 33. 33. this form and design revived during the Qing period as part of the Qing imperial porcelain commissions, which reproduced forms and designs of early Ming ceramics - Mouth rim partly restored, very minor traces of age
H. 26 cm
