Jäckel wurde als Oberst im Transport-Geschwader 1 mit dem Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes ausgezeichnet. Als Kommandeur flog er selbst Verpflegung und Munition in den Kessel von Demjansk und Stalingrad, und transportierte verwundete Soldaten aus dem Kessel.
Er fiel 1945 auf dem Flugplatz Finsterwalde einem Bombenangriff zum Opfer.
