Lot 123 | VALERIANO Bolzani, Giovanni Pierio (1477-1558) - Hieroglyphica sive de sacris Aegyptiorum. Basel: Michael Isengrin, 1556.
Estimate value
€ 800 – 1 200
First edition of the Hieroglyphica, a work that contains a vast collection of all the hieroglyphic knowledge of the time. The major importance of the text was the significance it had for Renaissance and Baroque iconography; it was in fact a source of emblematic images for artists, and its ancient inscriptions were study material for humanist historians. The work is based on the treatise of Orapollo, on the obelisks seen in Rome, on the Kabbalah, and on the Bible. Such was the success that eleven editions were published in the first seventy years. The monumental text is divided into 60 books, each of which describes and analyzes an animal, a plant, a symbol, a mythological character, an object, etc., or even a part of the body (including the male and female genitals, both illustrated on pp. 246-247).
Folio (334 x 224mm). Printer's device on title and at end, large woodcut portrait of the author within an elaborate woodcut border on the verso of title, woodcut initials, numerous illustrations (title with some dampstaining, tears and small paperflaws, in general some dampstaining, foxing and occasional browning). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (some staining, chipping and worming). Provenance: Biondella Valpantena Verona (bookplate).
