Horace Vernet war überzeugter Bonapartist und machte unter Napoleons Regime Karriere als Historien- und Militärmaler. Das Genre des Reiterbildnisses lag ihm wie kaum einem anderen Maler der Zeit. Dabei stellt er die Berühmtheiten meist im Galopp auf kraftvollen, ausdrucksstarken Pferden dar. Dass er sich hierbei ein gewisses Repertoire an klassischen Pferdehaltungen erarbeitet hat, die er immer wieder aufs Neue variiert, war die damals übliche Arbeitsweise. So finden sich sowohl im Werkverzeichnis als auch im Kunsthandel der 2000er Jahre gleich mehrere fast identisch galoppierende Pferde in Vernets Werk.
Sein deutscher Schüler Simon Meister (1796 - 1844) malte im Jahr 1732 ein Napoleonporträt zu Pferde, bei dem - wenngleich das Pferd eine andere Haltung einnimmt - die Darstellung Napoleons nahezu deckungsgleich mit dem vorliegenden Gemälde ist. Meisters Porträt befindet sich im Simeonstift, Trier, mit der Inventarnr. III 0260.

Frühschwundrisse, Farbverluste sowie Bereibungen am äußeren Rand durch Spiel im Rahmen, o.l. bis Mitte u. altrest. geschlossener Riss (ca. 120 cm) mit umliegenden Retuschen, stellenweise schwache Kratzer (ca. 4 bis 9 cm), mehrere punktuelle Retuschen.

The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
