Édition originale française. Ce célèbre ouvrage de propagande a été rédigé par Richard Verstegan, agent de Philippe II d’Espagne dans les Flandres et en France, pour relater les crimes attribués aux protestants dans toute l’Europe : ainsi peut-on observer « les cruautez des schismatiques en Angleterre », les « horribles cruautez des Huguenots en France », les « barbares cruautez des Gueuz es pays bas », ou encore les « persecutions contre les Catholicques par les Protestans Machiavellistes en Irlande ». Les spectaculaires gravures de l’ouvrage sont souvent attribuées à Jan Wierix, sans que l’on puisse l’affirmer avec certitude.

Titre-frontispice et 29 planches gravées représentant des supplices (page de titre restaurée, restauration en marge extérieure du feuillet A4, mouillure claire en bas de la marge extérieure des cahiers C-H, restaurations aux charnières et aux coins). Demi-veau marbré postérieur (XVIIe siècle ?), tranches rouges.
