Joachim Berthold. 1990 Die Arbeiten des deutschen Künstlers Joachim Berthold unterliegen einem unverwechselbaren Gestaltungsprinzip. Runde, kantige, konvexe, konkave, raue und glatte Elemente schmiegen sich aneinander und bilden so eine ganz eigene Formsprache. Die runde Skulptur legt mehrere Gussabdrücke frei, die an menschliche Gestalten erinnern. Diese sind in das Objekt eingebunden und erstarren in ihren Abdruck. Die menschlichen Figuren sind das zentrale Bildthema bei Berthold und können sich auch in ihrer Dreidimensionalität lösen, vom Negativ ins Positiv wechseln und ihrem eigenen Schatten einen Mit- oder Gegenspieler finden. Der Künstler entstammt einer Rosenheimer Goldschmiedefamilie und machte sich nach der Kölner Werkschule und der Münchner Akademie als freischaffenden Bildhauer 1945 selbstständig. 1940 heiratete er Gisela Sames und lebte bis zum Tod 1990 im bayerischen Oberaudorf. Seine Arbeiten wurden in Deutschland schnell bekannt und erfuhren darüber hinaus in den sechziger Jahren Anerkennung im Ausland. Es folgten Ausstellungen in Paris und Mailand, vor allem aber auch in Japan, Kanada und den Vereinigten Staaten, wie bei der Western Association of Art Museums von 1976 bis 1978 in acht amerikanischen Museen und Galerien.
