The present composition dates back to the main work of the painter Victor Müller, the "Nymph" which is a reclining nude in front of a dark landscape. The present work possibly is a preliminary study for the monumental painting that triggered controversial discussions due to its emphasised carnality in 1862. Gustave Courbet's influence who befriended Müller is significantly visible. The reclining pose refers back to his "Bacchante"; also the high horizon points to the Frenchman.
