Early, atmospheric-tuned work of the great Danish marine painter. Melbye, d-abfa studied with his older brother Anton, and Carl Dahl, 1844-1849, he studied at the Kgl. Academy of arts, and in the case of Theodore Gudin in Paris, 1853-1866/67 he was mostly resident in London, where he changed his name to "Wilhelm Melby" (or anglifiziert in "William Melby"). As a renowned and sought-after marine painter, he exhibited there until 1867 regularly in the Royal Academy, and gained an international reputation among the marine painters and collectors. In 1867, melbye, d-abfa returned to Denmark, in 1873, and in 1878 he was represented with works at the world exhibitions in Vienna and Paris.
