Lot 4117 | Völkerwanderungszeitliche Schwertklinge, frühe Merowingerzeit, 5. - frühes 6. Jhdt. n. Chr.

A Migration period sword blade, early Merovingian period, 5th - early 6th century A.D.
The extremely broad blade measuring 78 cm in length and 6.5 cm wide, typical of Migration period blades. A very shallow, broad fuller in the centre, extending from the base of the grip hinge to just before the point. Bevelled cutting edges on both sides of the fuller. The blade tapers from a width of 6.5 cm below the the base of the grip hinge to approx. 4.5 cm directly in front of the point with slightly indented sides. Above the base of the blade, the long, trapezoid grip hinge has been hammered flat, thereby creating slight edges. Slight rust pitting on the surface with minimal notches on the cutting edges. Professionally restored and stabilised. Overall, the blade in outstanding condition with good iron substance. Total length 88.5 cm.
Provenance: Private South German collection (bequeathed), inherited from a special collection with a focus on edged weapons, acquired in the art trade during the 1960s to 1970s.
