FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, 2 volumes, folio (474 x 330mm.), half-titles, 55 lithographed plates, comprising 52 on india paper, mounted, and 3 maps and plans, 42 lithographed illustrations in text, errata leaf at end of each volume, contemporary blue cloth-backed marbled boards, some spotting, upper hinge of vol.1 split, extremities slightly rubbed

This work, some fifteen years in preparation, provides a detailed overview of the route taken by Rey and Chenavard on their five-month journey from September 1843 through Greece, Asia Minor and Egypt. The plates include views in Athens, Constantinople, Ephesus, Smyrna, Cairo and Corfu. Chenavard published his own account in 1858 entitled Voyage en Grèce et dans le Levant.
