£ 2 000 – 3 000
WADSWORTH, Edward (1889-1949)

The Black Country. London: Ovid Press, 1920.

Wadsworth’s own copy of the signed limited edition, which was ‘specially seen through the press by the artist’ and contains a ‘unique woodcut now destroyed’; this is number 41 of 50 copies. His 'inspiration was the industrial landscape of the Black Country, through which he had travelled on train journeys between Liverpool and London, when leave took him south and duty called him back again to the harbour basins filled with striped and zig-zag-patterned ships [...] for Edward it was superb visual excitement - beauty in contrast of form as well as related form, beauty in the relentless vigour of the man-made landscape' (Barbara Wadsworth, Edward Wadsworth: A Painter’s Life, p.88).

Folio (351 x 252mm). One woodcut, 20 collotype plates, two small vignettes in black and red. Original black cloth, titled in black on gilt background (small tears at spine ends, corners slightly bumped). Provenance: Edward Wadsworth (1889-1949) – by descent to the present owners.

[Sold with:] – The Black Country. London: Ovid Press, 1920. Wadsworth’s working proof copy, with his annotations in pencil throughout. Folio (349 x 245mm). 20 plates, of which 12 are proofs before letters with the text supplied in pencil by the artist, the remaining 8 annotated in pencil ‘OK’. Original dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt (very lightly rubbed). Provenance: as above.
