Authorial presentation copy to Clarissa Eden, Countess of Avon, one of 750 copies, this copy unnumbered. In this, his last work of fiction, Waugh revived the character of Basil Seal, previously the main protagonist of Waugh's earlier novels, Black Mischief and Put Out More Flags.
Quarto (255 x 192mm). Half-title. Original blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, the others uncut (spine slightly faded, covers a fraction bowed). Provenance: Evelyn Waugh (authorial presentation inscription dated 27 October 1963 on limitation leaf, to:) – Clarissa Eden, Countess of Avon.
