[Paris, 1745.] [AND WITH:] Fête publique donnée par la ville de Paris à l'occasion du mariage de Monseigneur le Dauphin le 13. fevrier M.DCC.XLVII. [Paris, 1747.]

Three spectacular festival books commemorating the wedding nuptials of Louis XV’s children, in a contemporary red morocco binding with arms of the city of Paris. The first work brings together views of the festivals celebrating the marriage in 1739 of Louis XV’s eldest daughter Louise-Elisabeth and the second son of Philip V of Spain. Louis XV decided that the event would take place on the water between the Pont-Neuf and the Pont-Royal, and he entrusted Florentin Servandoni with the task of organizing this celebration. The remarkable intaglio illustrations document the entire spectacle on the Seine, from the structure built for the fireworks on the Pont-Neuf, the octagon “island” built for the musicians and the eight marine monsters surrounding the island, a plan of the superstructures built along the banks of the river to accommodate the viewers, and the Throne Loge in the form of a baldacchino attached to the Louvre in which the royal couple could view the spectacle. The final plates show plans and sections of the ballroom, and even a diagram of the arrangement of the plates of food.

The second work in this folio volume illustrates the equally spectacular marriage in February 1745 of Louis, Dauphin of France, to Maria Teresa, Infanta of Spain. Public buildings throughout the city were illuminated, and banquets, masked balls, dances, and musical performances were held. The plates illustrate the specially erected “salles” in which visiting guests could sit and view the spectacles, as well as scenes from the balls and banquets, and depictions of the illuminations. Of particular note are the fine plates illustrating night scenes.

Maria Teresa died in childbirth in July 1746, and a new marriage alliance was soon cemented, this time between the Dauphin and Marie-Josephe of Saxony. The third work bound in this volume illustrates major elements of that celebration, including the procession and its elaborate chariots, which allegorize the figures of Mars, Hymen, Ceres, Bacchus, and the City of Paris; and the fireworks display before the Hôtel de Ville.
