What Maisie KnewSiegfried Sassoon's copySASSOON, Siegfried (1885-1967). – JAMES, Henry (1843-1916). What Maisie Knew. London: William Heinemann, 1898. Siegfried Sassoon's copy, with an original drawing. First edition, first issue. On the title page, Sassoon has drawn a portrait of Maisie in a neat roundel. She has a suitably troubled look. This copy was likely obtained by Sassoon after the passing of its previous owner, Ruth Mayhew [Head], in 1940. Ruth was the wife of Dr. Henry Head, who worked closely with W.H.R. Rivers, the sympathetic psychiatrist who treated both Sassoon and Robert Graves for shell shock. Edel & Laurence A49a.Octavo. Half-title. 32 pp publisher's ads at end. Original blindstamped cloth (spine rubbed, slight lean, upper hinge repaired). Provenance: Ruth Mayhew, probably Ruth Mayhew Head, 1866-1940, the teacher and novelist (bookplate, manuscript date Oct:20, 1898) – Siegfried Sassoon (bookplate, manuscript monogram dated Oct. 1941, drawing on title-page).
