Presentation copy, limited edition, signed and inscribed by the author: ‘For Lovelace Anthony Stamer with all good wishes for his future happiness from Evelyn Waugh, 1st January 1948’. Number 16 of 20 copies. This touching note from Waugh to Stamer commemorates the day of his wedding to Stella Huguette Binnie. The book comprises a collection of travel essays recounting his travels to various parts of the world including West Africa, Mexico, British Guiana and Brazil. It offers a witty and insightful account of his experiences, observations and encounters with the people and cultures he met during his travels.
Octavo. Colour-printed frontispiece portrait of author. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained red, purple endpapers (extremities lightly rubbed, with some discolouration to spine and edges). Provenance: Lovelace Anthony Stamer (1917-2012; authorial presentation inscription, ownership inscription to front free endpaper).
