Öl auf Lwd. 70 x 49,5 cm. Doubliert. Rest. Min. besch. Rahmen (84 x 64 cm). Durchdacht und akribisch inszeniertes Stillleben in der für William Harnett typischen Manier. Vor einer kargen hölzernen Wand arrangiert der Künstler Bücher, Notenblätter, Flöte, Tintenfass, Krug und Vase. An der Wand in der Arte der Trompe-l'oeil-Malerei eine Taschenuhr, ein Schriftstück sowie eine Porträtzeichnung. Diese Zeichnung trägt rechts unten das Monogramm "AB", das möglicherweise auf Nichals Alden Brooks (erwähnt 1880 bis 1904) verweist, der in seinem Schaffen stark von Harnetts Kompositionen beeinflusst wurde. William Michael Harnett, der sich - wie er sich selbst äußerte - aus Geldnot der Stilllebenmalerei zugewandt hatte, da er sich teure Modelle für Genreszenen oder Porträts nicht leisten konnte - avancierte in den Vereinigten Staaten zu einem erfolgreichen Künstler. Die Einkünfte aus seinen ersten Verkäufen erlaubten ihm, im Herbst 1880 eine mehrjährige Europareise anzutreten, 1881 ließ er sich für mehr als drei Jahre in München nieder. 1886 kehrte er nach New York zurück.
