Lot 180 | Wisden
WISDEN – Cricketers' Almanack for 1892 [-1895]. London: John Wisden & Co., [1892-1895].

These early 1890s volumes indicate the changes in Wisden under Sydney Pardon's editorship. Pardon started in 1891, and continued for some thirty-five years. The volumes almost instantly become weightier volumes than those issued previously, and are not only packed with match scores but full reports, feature articles and strong overseas coverage.

4 volumes, octavo (162 x 104mm), all bound in original wrappers. 1892: front cover states second issue, photographic plate, lxii, 330, [20]pp. (tiny marginal nick to title, otherwise a clean copy, wrappers with spine repaired preserving the vast majority of the original spine, covers faintly soiled, rear cover faintly creased); 1893: front cover states second issue, photographic plate, liv, 376, [18]pp. (margins of plate faintly spotted, wrappers with spine repaired preserving the vast majority of the original spine, covers faintly soiled, front cover faintly creased); 1894: front cover states second issue, photographic plate, lxxiv, 390, [24]pp. (margins of plate faintly spotted, wrappers with spine repaired preserving the vast majority of the original spine, covers lightly stained and soiled, rear cover with small marginal tear repaired); 1895: front cover states second issue, photographic plate, lxxvi, [2], 386, [14]pp. (margins of plate lightly spotted, textblock light browned in margins, wrappers with spine repaired preserving the vast majority of the original spine). Provenance: ink presentation inscription dated Easter 1920 on p.xiii.
